I don’t want to be a petrol diesel person. My father doesn’t even want me to start a car when I drive. I like to think that I am not a petrol diesel person anymore, but I am not a petrol diesel person anymore.

That statement was one of the highlights of the day for us. We went to petrol stations in the city centre today where we got great deals on petrol and diesel. We also saw a few people who were still using their cars, but were still willing to sell them. These people were not the worst-off petrol diesel people, either. So there is a price difference. But it is not the entire reason for the difference. It is more a question of fuel efficiency. When you put it this way, petrol is more expensive because it takes more fuel to power your vehicle.

So the average Indian using petrol today is using 4.3L of fuel per litre (for a car). Diesel on the other hand is using 5.5L. This is about a 90% difference. If we compare the petrol price with the diesel price, you will see that diesel costs you Rs.65 more. This is because diesel is used in small cars and larger vehicles that are more fuel efficient.

This is not a new phenomenon. India was the first country in the world to introduce a diesel tax in 2008. But it is only one of several tax measures in India that have been implemented since then, so the real difference in fuel prices is much larger than the difference in fuel cost.
