To the best of my knowledge it is not known whether or not lizards feel pain. This is because there have been no studies to verify the issue. This is something to consider for the layperson.

The fact is, it is a good point. It’s certainly true that we can’t study mammals as they do not have a central nervous system. This is especially true of non-mammalian vertebrates, which is why we have no idea of what it feels like to be dead. This is a reason that our understanding of how death occurs in non-mammalian vertebrates is so limited.

However, no matter the fact of this, it is an important point. The fact that we don’t know if lizards feel pain just means that we don’t know how to treat it as we would any other condition. That in essence means that what we do with lizards is not going to be the same as what we do for the rest of the animal kingdom.

Although we can assume that lizards feel pain, the fact that we do not know how to treat it means that we can not say what we feel. You could argue that that is a good thing because our ability to feel pain is what makes us human, but it is also possible to argue that our ability to feel pain makes us more prone to make bad decisions.

Just ask my mom. My mom does not like the idea of pain. She thinks that having your limbs bound to a chair or something is more painful than being blind. Just to watch a lizard slowly die is a little too much for her.

I agree with the sentiment that our minds aren’t very good at handling pain. There’s always something better to do. Just like it isn’t good to feel pain, it is not good to be in a hurry to kill a lizard.

I think there’s a difference between a quick and painless kill and a slow and painful death, but we can’t really say.
